Have you heard of the term mixology? If not, it’s the art of mixing drinks, especially alcoholic ones, to create new flavors and experiences that delight the palate. But mixology isn’t just about combining ingredients. Behind every delicious cocktail is knowledge, creativity, and the expertise of the bartender.
For PIB College’s Hotel Management students, learning doesn’t just happen in classrooms. Recently, they had an exciting opportunity to learn the art of mixology through a collaboration with Orang Tua, a leading beverage brand with decades of experience.
Through this exclusive class, students explored different types of alcoholic beverages, presentation techniques, and how to craft cocktails that are not only delicious but visually stunning as well.
Why Learn Mixology?
Mixology is not just a skill but an art that opens doors to countless opportunities in the hospitality and food & beverage industries. Today, careers like bartender and mixologist are highly respected. Many cocktails crafted by famous mixologists have become iconic menu items at world-class hotels and restaurants.
Learning mixology also broadens your knowledge about alcoholic beverages—not just their flavors but also their origins, characteristics, and the best ways to serve them. The result? You’ll not only create delightful drinks but also tell engaging stories about them, offering unforgettable experiences for your customers.
What You Learn in This Class?
- Understanding Alcohol Characteristics
Students began by learning about the unique traits of different types of alcohol. From the neutral flavour of vodka to the caramel sweetness of rum, each has its own story. The class dives into their origins and how to choose the best ingredients. - Basic Mixology Techniques
Mixology is more than just mixing. It involves mastering techniques such as:
– Shaking: Mixing and chilling ingredients in a shaker.
– Stirring: Gently stirring to preserve texture and flavor.
– Muddling: Crushing ingredients like fruits or herbs to release their aroma and flavor.
Students learn these techniques firsthand from professionals, ensuring they get them right. - Popular Cocktail and Mocktail Recipes
This is the most fun part! Students learn to make classic cocktails like Mojitos and Margaritas, as well as trending modern creations. They’re also taught to make mocktails, the non-alcoholic versions of cocktails. - Presentation and Storytelling
Mixology isn’t just about taste; appearance and the story behind the drink matter too. Students learn to garnish drinks to make them Instagram-worthy and how to tell stories about their creations to connect with customers.
